KAMPALA: A WhatsApp group in the sun urban sunburn of Northern Kampala, has collected tones of garbage in a clean up excercise to keep the neighborhood environmentally clean.
The group which has a membership of around 1000 people, has been active in community policing and other neighborhood watch activities.
MediaScapeNews understands that it is perhaps the most community oriented WhatsApp group in Uganda.
in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Kyanja, local councilors and a team from the Kampala Capital City Authority, the group started the clean up on Saturday and the excercise will be monthly, according to Duncan Klein Kirungi, the group’s chairman.
The group, also known as Kyanja Neighborhood Watch, urges all members and others who are not on the app to keep Kyanja clean and live better lives.
“In three years time we should have been a Setlite city with greener environments. We will plant trees especially the fruit trees where every one can pick and enjoy by our efforts, Mr. Kirunga told MediaScapeNews this morning.
“I urge the government to empower all other areas in a bid to fight crimes,” he added.
The occasion was graced by Hon Joel Senyonyi, the Member of Parliament Nakawa West Constituency.
