Kampala, Uganda: The Ministry of Health in Uganda is taking proactive measures to monitor and improve staff performance in government health facilities by introducing key performance indicators (KPIs).
Under this new system, staff in various districts and referral hospitals will be evaluated by their supervisors based on their key outputs on a quarterly basis.
A recent review conducted by the ministry’s top management during their supervision visits to several district and regional hospitals revealed a lack of evidence of output from certain doctors and specialists in government hospitals.
Some doctors, including consultants and senior consultants, were found to have not performed surgeries in these hospitals for months, and where they did, the number of surgeries was insufficient to justify their roles in the hospital.
Key performance indicators (KPIs) are being introduced to address these issues. KPIs are essential because they focus on performance aspects that are crucial in achieving the strategic goals of the health sector.
These goals may revolve around promoting healthy populations, ensuring equitable access to health services, and more.
This move is expected to enhance efficiency among government health practitioners and ensure that taxpayers’ money is utilized effectively.
It aims to address concerns about doctors spending significant time away from their workstations to attend private health centers and clinics, often leaving ordinary Ugandan patients in urgent need.
Tragically, there have been reported cases of patient deaths in government hospitals due to the absence of doctors or nurses when needed.
By implementing KPIs, the Ministry of Health seeks to create a more accountable and efficient healthcare system that prioritizes the well-being of all Ugandans.
Monitoring staff performance using these indicators will help ensure that health professionals are consistently present and committed to their responsibilities, ultimately leading to better healthcare delivery.
