KAMPALA: Singer Sheebah Karungi has finally broken her silence and told the Ugandan Police who the man who raped her is.
Following a viral video on social media in which diva Sheebah Karungi revealed a powerful man with guards attempted to rape her over week ago, the Uganda Police Force has picked interest when she recorded a statement today, May 17, 2022.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has instituted inquiries into the alleged incident of indecent assault against, Sheeba Karungi, a popular music artist, after she formally made her complaint at CID headquarters today 17.05.2022,” a polie statement signed by Spokesman Fred Enanga says.
“During the interaction with the CID officers, Sheeba revealed the details and the individual who was involved and the related circumstances. In her complaint she clearly mentions the suspect and refutes the ongoing speculation in sections of the media that it was Andrew Mwenda,” Enanga adds.
Following the birthday bash of Land Forces Commander Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba in Entebbe on May 7, Sheeba Kalungi went on YouTube on May 9 with a video and claimed that some man who appears on television and presents himself as a role model raped her, prompting many people social media t allege it was veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda who was at the bash where many artists performed except her.
“TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN : I don’t care what you think about when you see me on stage or in any of my videos dressed the way I dress up; You better RESPECT MY BODY. It’s MINE, I get to do whatever I want to do with It. You DON’T. You can watch but you CERTAINLY CAN’T TOUCH,” Sheeba captioned her self –recorded video in w tweet.
In this video, she refers to ‘an old pervert who was trying to be funny in her car and getting to me inappropriately in front of my members’ at a place she had been hired to perform.
When the Mwenda tag went viral, Gen Muhoozi took to twitter to clear his name.
“I have read all your comments about Sheebah. I have seriously interrogated my brother Andrew Mwenda and he says he has never met the lady. So, this is definitely another fake story!!” Muhoozi tweeted.
Mwenda followed with a lengthy write-up describing Sheeba’s claim as a sickening publicity stunt and called on the police to take interest and have his name cleared.
Mwenda Wrote in part: She does not reveal the name of this man but claims this man has SFC guards and that the incident happened at an event where she performed. Yet she does not mention the event, the date, time and place of her rape.
Sheeba claims, again with characteristic ambiguity, that this man violated her body to her disgust but she does not specify whether it was rape or indecent assault. But she claims he did so in the presence of her staff in her car and was protected by his guards from SFC.
I find it strange that a woman of her stature can be violated in such a humiliating and painful experience and instead of reporting the offender to the police, she takes the matter onto social media. To gain what? Sympathy? Why not seek justice through the police and the courts? In any case she could have pursued both: sympathy in the public sphere and justice in the courts of law.
When her video came out, someone went on social media claiming that I was that person who raped her. I have never in my life met this Sheeba and had never even heard of her until this video came out and allegations were made against me. When I watched the video, I gave her the benefit of the doubt believing she is a decent person. I expected her, seeing how viral these allegations have gone, to come out and say I am being wrongly accused since I have never met her. She has kept stone silent.
“In view of the above, a team of Detectives has commenced investigations on the matter to ensure justice for the victim. We do thank Sheeba for taking the courage to report the matter and assure the public that as Uganda Police we take matters of Gender Based Violence seriously,” Enanga concludes in his statement to the press.
